Digital Data Collection
Coach standard 2 and 6 is fulfilled by the digital data collection that I utilize within my classroom. Within my teaching practices, I have used digital data collection through county provided apps in addition to formal data collection. This data collected through the apps First in Math, Dreambox, Raz Kids and more informs my practices and small group interventions (ISTE coach 6b). Tools such as Raz kids and Dreambox allows adaptations to their digital lessons to help build student understanding and review past standards that they may need additional practice on. In addition to using these tools for assessing, I have instructed others how to assign, review reports, and download provided instructions for families and students (ISTE coach 6a). These tools not only supply incredible data – and rough data – showing the level at which students are practicing on their own, it supplies great insight for me to better teach and improve my teaching practices to align with what each individual student needs. This goal setting is both for myself as an educator to maintain progress and pacing, but allows for students to reflect on their goals, be it time on task in a tool or points/stickers earned in an app, to increase their feelings of success and growth (ISTE coach 6c).
As a result of this work, I have been able to better differentiate my students work, send students tasks based on their needs and strengths, as well as connect with students and their families to celebrate their determination or needs for improvement on independent tasks. This is in my opinion the most frequently used and most impactful way to use instructional technology and gaming in a large elementary classroom setting.
