Screen Casts

Representing the Coach standards 4 and 7 are the screencasts that I have created within our digital classroom. With screen casts of lessons and “digital trips” I am able to share more with the students that pertain to their personal interests. Within BCPS our curriculum is heavy and while teachers work very hard to get all lessons in, it comes at the cost of student guided learning and interest, but creating supplemental lessons as well as sharing lessons that may be skipped due to time constraints learners can access their course and continue to work on what relates to them.

In addition these screen casts are assisting not only the students but families in their digital citizenship. I frequently model digital citizen practices when casting, speaking to the importance of removing personal identification or information, as well as what to do if you are not taken to designated sites. While the first thing that often pops into mind about digital citizenship is how to remain safe, I also reflect on how many families in my title I building did not have access to chrome books or assistive technologies until the shift to digital learning during Covid-19. In response to this, I have created many screen casts for parents and students to help them learn how to navigate our digital learning platform in addition to how to open new tabs, log in and out of our google meets, and even how to click on a link and what it does.

It has been an interesting shift to fully remote learning and a detrimental shift for students who were still learning to spell and write to then be required to type their answers and find the correct keys. While this is a difficult task, technology is there to aid in students practice and will give us a greater appreciation for paper and pencil when we are able to return in person.
